Year 10 and 12 Parent Update on Phase 3

19th June 2020

Protocol for phase 3: Curriculum Catch Up Phase: Parents

From Monday 22nd June

In summary: No more than 25% of the combined cohort (year 10 plus year 12) will be onsite at any one time. This equals 62 students. This is on top of the provision already in place for children of critical workers and vulnerable families. Learning will take place on Teams in computer rooms for year 10 so that students are not doing different activities from those at home, and so that staff are not having to set different work for different groups of pupils. Learning for year 12 will take place in classrooms in very small numbers (no more than 6). There will be a different subject focus each day, with heads of department able to select which pupils they would like in based on engagement reports and what has been gathered from the meetings in the welcome phase. Staff from the relevant subject will be invited in to support the learning taking place on the relevant half-day.

Identification of students.

Students will be identified by their teachers and then invited via emails to parents to come in for specific sessions. Students are being prioritised by their teachers based on educational need so that there is an equitable access to the exam courses. They will get invited in around a week before they are due to come in. The number of sessions a student is invited to will differ from others as teachers prioritise students at a subject level. Email invites are being sent to the primary email address we have on record for each child around a week before the session.

Year 10

Students will be invited in for a 10am-3pm session with a subject specialist teacher to support their continued working on Teams. There will be a half-hour break in the middle, which will vary in time for different groups to allow us to maintain social distancing beyond the classroom. All sessions are happening in computer rooms so that students can be supported with accessing the work that has been set by their teacher. The capacity of each classroom has been individually calculated and adapted and will be less than half the normal capacity, often nearer a quarter.

Year 12:

Students will be invited in for morning (09:30-12:00) or afternoon (13:00-15:30) sessions with their subject teacher to support their learning. These will be happening in adapted classrooms in North Block to allow for social distancing and there will never be more than 6 in a room at a time. They will also never be in for both a morning and afternoon session on the same day. However, they are likely to be in more regularly as a result. Where a subject is repeated below it is where a subject has more than one class, it does not mean a student will be invited in multiple times in the same week for the same subject.

Invitation and Transport

  •          Students will be invited in by email, they are not to turn up uninvited.
  •          Where possible, please travel by foot, bike or car. See https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-safer-travel-guidance-for-passengers for more guidance on travelling.
  •          Students are NOT to travel to their session if they are experiencing any symptoms of coronavirus. Please call us or email info@st-annes.uk.com so we know not to expect them.
  •          Year 10s are not expected to wear school uniform. Although there is no specific guidance, it seems good practice for students to change when arriving home at the end of a day.
  •          Please bring your own resources (pencil case and particularly a calculator for maths) in case they are needed. You are not to share equipment without wiping it down before and after use with the wipes in the room.

Arrival

  •          Year 10: On arrival they are to enter via the quad gate and be directed to sign in sheets and then the hall (and the vestibule as an overflow if needed) where they will be socially distanced from each other. From there a member of SLT and, where relevant, the head of department will explain the logistics of their day before their teachers take them in small groups via their designated route to the relevant rooms for the day.
  •          Year 12: On arrival they are to enter via the quad gate and be directed to sign in sheets in the vestibule before going straight to their classrooms for their sessions. Their teacher will meet them there.
  •          Students are not to arrive at the school more than 10 minutes before their start time and must not congregate with others at the front of school on arrival, but come straight in.
  •          Students must maintain a 2m gap between each other when waiting to sign in and sign up for lunches.
  •          Guidance does not require schools to put in one-way systems. However, due to the way we have arranged our days, year 10s will be taken to rooms and taken down at lunch and the end of the day via different routes, so there will, in essence, be one-way routes throughout the day. Year 12s will be in in such small numbers and with clear social distancing markers on the floor, it is not felt to need a one-way system for these older students.

During the session

  •          There will inevitably be a need for some social interaction for a few minutes at the start between students who have not been together for a number of months. However, the purpose for coming in is not to socialise, they are there to work. They can socialise on Zoom later!
  •                Year 10: Teachers are to support students with the work that has been set on Teams by their normal class teacher.
  •                Year 12: These will not be in computer rooms, and teachers will lead these sessions as they see fit.
  •          If a student needs to visit the toilet, the member of staff is to remind them of the protocols on the posters around school and to send them off. The toilets will be locked by default, and the pupil is to go to admin to get them unlocked. This allows us to monitor how frequently they are being used.
  •          Year 10 students may wish to bring their own headphones so that, if directed by the teacher, they can listen to the audio of a video set by their teacher on Teams. This is not for general listening to music while working!
  •          There will be no mixing during the day between groups. This will reduce the number of people that they are in contact with and will remain socially distanced throughout.
  •          The library will sadly not be available.
  •          If teachers need to be able to see the screen of a student but cannot get close enough to see it with the child sat at the machine, they will need to ask them to step away from the computer for a moment to read the screen.
  •          Everyone (staff and students) will be expected to get into good hygiene behaviours and wipe down their own chairs, keyboards and mouses at the start and end of sessions. Rooms will also be more deeply cleaned by the cleaning team at the end of the day. Windows will be opened to keep the rooms well ventilated.
  •          Year 10: will not be allowed to leave before 3pm. Year 12: will not be leaving before their session is over.
  •          Year 10: At 3pm, students will be escorted down to the front of school by their class teacher following the route from earlier in the day, and then can leave. Groups cannot have impromptu breaks during the session and leave the class to do so.
  •          In the unlikely event of a fire, normal routines apply: staff are not to follow the phase 3 route, but to take their class out of the building by the nearest available exit and move around the school site to the playground. They are to line up there. If social distancing is possible, but should not impinge upon ensuring students are safe from fire.
  •          There are wipes and sanitisers in each classroom, with bins outside each room.

Lunchtime

  •          Staff are to take their students at the designated time down to the canteen.
  •          We would urge students to bring a packed lunch to reduce footfall in the canteen. The canteen will not be available for year 12 as they are not remaining on site over lunchtime. Children who would normally be in receipt of free school meals will be able to get food at lunchtime. For other year 10s using the canteen, ensure there is money on their account before they try to buy any food. Small groups will be having their half hour break at different times to reduce mixing even further.
  •          The lunchbreaks are staggered for different classrooms to reduce even further the number of pupils in the playground (or hall if wet). They will be supervised by a member of staff and expected to remain 2m apart.

Behaviour Management

  •          Normal rules for behaviour in lessons (apart from not wearing uniform) apply for these sessions, including food and drink, and the use of mobile phones for non-educational purposes as directed by the teacher.
  •          If students repeatedly fail to follow the expectations with regards to safe practice, they will be asked to leave the site to go home. This is for their safety and for the safety of others. Parents will be contacted.
  •          Year 10 will remain on site for the entire session, which includes lunchtime. They will not be allowed to visit local shops etc in their break so they must come with what they need for the whole day. Food and drink cannot be shared between students.
  •          Face masks are not expected to be worn as we are maintaining 2m distancing. However, if a pupil arrives wearing one, they will not be asked to remove it.
  •          Where some are working in computer rooms, staff are to remind students they are not to touch any science equipment in the room, including the gas taps.
