The School Day and Timings

The school day:

No staggered starts and ends to the day: These will not work effectively with the number of pupils taking public transport. There is a risk that they will only end up amassing away from the school waiting for their time to come in. That does not help, but simply moves the problem to beyond our control. Instead, they will be directed to come straight in on arrival, follow the one-way system, go straight to their designated classrooms and not congregate in spaces.

Mini-staggering: We plan to have mini-staggering for end of lessons and end of day, to reduce the movement around the site and off it. It would only be a few minutes for different rooms, to reduce movement in corridors. We plan to use a short bell for each dismissal, with rooms knowing in advance which bell to dismiss on.

More doubles/triple lessons: We are aiming, as much as possible, to have lessons that span periods 1/2 and 4/5, potentially 1/2/3 or 3/4/5. It means that for children may see their teacher for a morning a fortnight, rather than a period each week. This will vastly reduce the amount of movement around the school site, particularly for teachers, as pupils will be based in hubs around the school.

Tutor Time: We are going to keep tutor times. We feel this is the worst time to remove that which allows the most effective safeguarding, welfare checks, sharing of important H&S information and adds to our cohesion as a community. Assemblies, although possible (as they are within year groups), will be rare.

School Day Timings:

Before School: Students can arrive from 08:00. When your daughter or son arrives, they are to arrive via the nearest entrance and join the one-way system round to designated non-science classrooms for their year group. At 08:30, students who are not already in their own tutor base are to move at this point, via the one-way system where relevant, to their tutor base to be welcomed by their tutor.

08:40: Tutor time.

09:10: Period 1: in most cases this will be for a double lesson, with only some pupils moving at the changeover between P1 and P2.

11:00-11:10: Breaktime: Staggered dismissal of classes to breaktime. Pupils to go, via the one-way system, either to designated section of playground for their year group, to queue for canteen via room 44 at set times for each year group, or to set indoor spaces for their year group if wet/cold. At the end of breaktime, students will be dismissed from the playground by year group.

11:35: Period 3

12:25-12:35:  Lunchtime: Staggered dismissal of classes to breaktime. Pupils to go, via the one-way system, either to designated section of playground, to queue for canteen via room 44 at set times for each year group, or to set indoor spaces for their year group if wet/cold. At the end of lunch, students will be dismissed from the playground by year group.

13:25: Period 4: in most cases this will be for a double lesson, with only some pupils moving at the changeover between P4 and P5.

15:20-15:25: Staggered dismissal of classes to leave for home.
