Careers Information, Advice and Guidance

St Anne’s recognises that all young people need a planned programme of activities to enable them to make appropriate choices for the next stages in their education and to help them choose careers likely to lead to future economic well-being and personal fulfilment and happiness. Schools are legally required to secure independent careers advice for all pupils and St Anne’s is committed to providing a planned programme of careers education for all pupils in years 7 to 13.

All pupils are entitled to Careers Information, Advice and Guidance (CIAG) that meets professional standards of practice and is person centred, impartial and confidential and this is integrated into the pupils’ experience of the whole curriculum. CIAG is designed to meet the current needs of all our pupils and encourages positive self-esteem, individual responsibility for their own careers and an awareness that lifelong learning is the key to career development. In our rapidly changing world, it is vital that our pupils develop the capability to become career entrepreneurs.

As a school we aim to make sure that every student has the opportunity to access information, advice and guidance that is suited to their personal needs and requirements. All staff contribute to this through their roles as tutors and subject teachers. However specialist activities are provided by external agencies such as the Independent Careers Advisor, Southampton University Outreach Team and other Universities, EBP South (Education business partnership) and selected providers as appropriate. Whenever possible past students and members of the local education and business communities are invited into school to share their first-hand experience of training routes and work contexts with our students.

A careers programme is incorporated into the PSHE programme and supported by extended learning sessions as well as organised visits to relevant institutions. The careers department also provide specialist careers and personal development advice and at least one personal guidance interview is offered to each student while they are in St. Anne’s; however many students will have several interviews in accordance with their needs.

Along with all the career related opportunities available, all students in Year 10 participate in two weeks of work experience. Whilst all pupils are encouraged to find their own placements, assistance is provided when required to make it a rewarding and beneficial experience. St Anne’s are always pleased to hear from anyone who would like to get involved in our Careers Education programme or would be able to provide work experience for our students.
